We offer a variety of in-person workshops at SFU Burnaby and SFU Surrey, as well as live online workshops. We also have a catalogue of downloadable classroom resources for K-12 groups.

FAQs

How much do the workshops cost? 

There is no cost! All our workshop are free. Groups are responsible for getting to campus, but there is no charge for the workshops themselves. 

When can I request a workshop? 

Workshop requests are open for submissions during the second week of the term

  • Fall Term (September - December) - requests open second week of September
  • Spring Term (January - April) - requests open second week of January
  • Summer Term (May - August) - requests open second week of May

Note: Workshop requests for May and June can be submitted any time after March 15.

How long are the workshops?

Most of our workshop are 90 minutes long. Please refer to our workshop listing for lengths and variations.

How many people can attend a workshop at once? 

Some of our workshops can accommodate up to 60, but most can accommodate a class of 30. 

What Campus are the workshops available at?

All of our workshop topics are offered at the Burnaby campus, and several are also offered at the Surrey campus. 

Can I request a virtual workshop? 

Yes! We offer the majority of our workshop topics both in person and online. 

Can my class be met at the bus stop / parking lot?

You will be provided a map/directions to the room in your booking confirmation.

Can I contact the workshop instructor ahead of time?

All of your requests and notes will be shared with the instructor. If you would like to be in contact with the instructor in advance of the workshop to discuss details, that can be arranged.

I have a student with accommodation needs – who should I speak to?

Please list any accommodation needs on the form when requesting a workshop, and we will follow up when confirming. If any additional needs come up, please reach out to sfuscienceoutreach@sfu.ca.

Is there a place for my class to eat lunch?

If you are planning on eating packed lunches on campus, let us know – we have a few suggestions of suitable places to eat packed lunches. Please note that purchasing food on campus may mean walking a fair distance from the classroom, and take a long time during lunch hour.

Who teaches the workshops?

Science in Action workshops are led by graduate students who are studying the subject they teach.

Do the workshops meet BC Science Curriculum guidelines?

Each workshop page describes the grade level curriculum guidelines it fulfils.

Can I schedule more than one workshop in the same day?

Yes, if they are available!

My child is homeschooled. Can we come for a workshop too?

Science in Action groups are intended for class groups, not individuals, and include safety and risk contracts with the schools and class teachers. We have had some homeschool groups organize to come to workshops together, with one parent acting as the main legally responsible contact.

Are weekend workshops available?

Science in Action workshops are only available during the week between 8:30am-2:30pm. Please see our workshop listings for specific days certain workshops are available. This will vary by subject and term.

Can we get a campus tour while we are there?

Can I request a workshop on a topic not on the list?

We would love to hear what you are interested in! We are always looking to develop the program, though we can’t guarantee a new topic will be feasible. Send us your ideas!
