Biophysics student headlines Canadian taekwondo team at the FISU World University Games

Olympic athlete and 91ܽ (SFU) biophysics student Josipa Kafadar is once again representing Canada on the world stage at the , where she will be competing in taekwondo.

The FISU Games officially kick off today in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, featuring 8,500 university athletes from over 150 countries competing in 18 sports, along with arts and culture events and a conference featuring academic research on university sport.

“It is essentially a mini version of the Olympics for student-athletes,” Kafadar says. “It is so much more than just going to compete in your sport.”

Kafadar is one of  to compete at the event. She’s joined by PDP student Sofie Nicholson and computing science student Gordon Cheuk.

Kafadar has been practicing taekwondo since she was four years old and joined the national team when she was 14. Last year she represented Canada at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“Being a part of the Olympic team last year has made me more confident in my skills and abilities to overcome high pressure scenarios,” she says. “I'm super excited for what's coming up this month!”
