Science Workshops

Why Be Part of Science in Action?

  • Our workshops integrate with the BC Science Curriculum
  • Early success in science builds confidence in science skills and reasoning
  • Our teaching lab introduces students to real science activities using real equipment, with training in good safety habits

We are always working on new ideas, so check back for new topics as they are created. Many of our workshops can also be delivered virtually via zoom - ask for more details!

Course Topics

Astronomy

Astronomy

Take a walk amongst the stars in this out of this world experience. Learn more about Astronomy, Telescopes, and the vast universe beyond Earth's atmosphere. Book a tour of the Trottier Observatory to round out your workshop experience.

In the virtual version of this workshop, your class will hear from one of our Observatory staff and have an opportunity to ask them all their questions about space!

Anatomy (Grade 9-12)

Anatomage

Explore the various body systems and organs through digital dissecting at our anatomage table at the human anatomy lab.  Learn how the Anatomage table works and gt an overview of the whole body or go deeper into one area. Engage in hands-on activities with other specimens in the lab or go more in-depth on the Anatomage table in the online workshop.

Available on Thursdays and Fridays at SFU Burnaby campus or online.

Physics

Lights in Action

Learn about light, colour and lasers.  Lasers are used in a vast range of applications from Blu-ray players and medical surgery to fibre optic communications. This hands-on workshop takes students through different workstations to explore concepts such as refraction, critical angles, the snell law, reflection, laser mazes, energy, colours of light, colour filtering and the colour spectrum.

Forces and Motion (Newtons Law)

Explore Newton’s Three Laws of Motion and gravity with a hands-on demonstration and fun games that help solidify students’ understanding. Workshops for more advanced learners include Newton's Law of Gravitation. This workshop is flexible and can range in difficulty depending on the needs of your class.

Electromagnetism

What is electricity? What is magnetism? Why and how are they related? Create an electromagnet and conduct experiments to find the answers!

Math

Math

Looking for ways to get your students engaged and excited about Math? Our team is hard at work creating workshops to do just that! Check back soon for specific topics.

Biology

Biology

We are working with our leaders to create new biology workshops! Check back soon for specific topics.

Chemistry

Chemistry

Our chemistry workshop for K-12 students includes making predictions and observations using the scientific method, explores the properties of different states of matter, delves into various mixtures and separation processes, elements, endothermic and exothermic reactions, chemical energy and so much more.  Workshops and discussions can be tailor-fit to the grade level and learning outcomes of your class.
