SCA at the Vancouver Book Fair

The SCA's is the Guest Curator of the , which runs October 18–20, 2019, at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. This choice makes good sense. Not only is Slade an experienced curator of exhibitions and events, she's also deeply invested in art books in multiple ways. Most directly, she was the founding editor of and, with Kay Higgins, is the co-editor and co-publisher of . But also, while Slade works thoughtfully across disciplines and in a variety of media as an artist, including textiles, sculpture, sound, performance, film, video, print, and publication, books (art books and otherwise) are an enduring interest of hers, variously informing and inspiring her artistic and academic projects.

There are other SCA-related people in the Fair, as well. On Sunday, October 20, in the Rennie Room, the SCA's will "discuss writing about listening" with critic and curator Godfre Leung. Priest and Leung both contributed to issue 13 of the , and they'll be introduced by Third Rail publisher Cameron Keith Gainer. On Sunday at 3:00 PM, the SCA's will be giving a talk in the Rennie Room titled "The Beginning The Middle and The End. Again.," focusing on her "recent artworks that involve books and magazines." And at 5:00 PM in Rennie Room, SCA MFA alumni Casey Wei will be presenting on her ongoing project, which is "a printed matter and music label that produces and releases works under the framework of the popularesoteric." Finally, SCA visual art students participating in the course “The Practice of Artists’ Publishing,” lead by Kathy Slade, will present "not doing a talk," a special research project produced especially for the Fair in the Exhibition Commons (October 19–20, 11:00-7:00 PM), drawing on ECUAD Library’s excellent artist book collection.
