PUB 638: Design Awareness in Publishing Processes and Products

More than pretty pages: how ethics and values impact publication products and processes

This course asks publishing design students to critically examine their own professional values and ethics that guide their design decisions in creating publications, consider their responsibilities in shaping narratives and knowledge, and explore how design can reinforce or challenge systems of power. Through hands-on projects, students will practice co-design methods, working collaboratively with peers and community partners to explore design and publishing as a socially engaged practice. We’ll dig into how sustainability and decolonization intersect with publishing to create equitable, inclusive, and responsible forms of communication.
