Madeline H., 5th Year BA Psychology
What academic year and program are you in?
I am in my fifth-year of my Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in Psychology.
Who is your supervisor?
My lab supervisor is Dr. Tanya MacGillivray.
Could you describe your experience in the Research Engagement course?
Through Research Engagement and Dr. MacGillivray’s Culture and Development Lab, I had the opportunity to work with graduate student Zahra Halavani on her project exploring early childhood social communication in Canada and Vanuatu. My favourite part of working on this project was learning how to qualitatively code infant-directed behaviour of caregivers in diverse cultures. I also enjoyed learning how to edit video materials in preparation for coding and seeing how caregivers and infants from different cultures interact under different conditions.
Do you have any tips for students looking to get involved in research labs?
My advice to any students aspiring to join a research lab is to stay positive and persevere! Keep applying to labs that align with your interests and academic goals and apply every term. If possible, take the time to read through their publications and incorporate that knowledge into your application to show your genuine interest in their work!
