Katrina V., 4th year BA Psychology minoring in Counselling and Human Development
What academic year and program are you in?
I am in my fourth-year majoring in Psychology and minoring in Counselling and Human Development.
Who is your supervisor?
My supervisor is Distinguished Professor and Helping and Happiness Lab Director, Dr. Lara Aknin, as well as Master's Student, Kristina Castaneto, and PhD Student, Tiara Cash.
Could you describe your experience in the Research Engagement course?
During my Research Engagement course, I had the opportunity to contribute to two impactful studies—one exploring first-year students' life transitions and another examining friendship dynamics through scale development. My work involved participant management, data cleaning, literature reviews, and preparing study materials for ethics submission. Through these experiences, I gained a deeper understanding of research, from refining study materials to ensuring data accuracy, while also expanding my knowledge of the science of happiness and well-being.
In my current Directed Studies, I’ve continued exploring scale development by launching pilot studies and conducting think-aloud interviews. A highlight of this experience has been the opportunity to present our research at the JEDAI Research Fair. What I’ve valued most about both roles is the supportive and hands-on learning environment, where I’ve had the opportunity to take on meaningful responsibilities alongside a great team that continuously inspires and challenges me.
Do you have any tips for students looking to get involved in research labs?
For students interested in getting involved in research labs I would say don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! Research can feel intimidating at first, but taking the initiative to reach out to professors, ask questions, and explore different topics can open up exciting possibilities.
