Exemplifying the limitless possibilities within arts and social sciences graduate studies
Defying a simple or single description, the possibilities within graduate studies in SFU’s Faculty Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) are incredibly exciting and truly limitless.
With 20 master’s programs and 12 PhD programs available to choose from, FASS graduate students pursue – and often combine – studies and research from the most diverse array of expertise areas at the university. Our combination of program choices, interdisciplinary and collaborative study, and supervision from leading experts creates a dynamic environment for students of all backgrounds and interests.
To celebrate this diversity and contribute to university-wide efforts recognizing SFU’s graduate students, their projects and publications, we’ve launched the FASS Graduate Student Spotlight.
Our inaugural eight students are:
- Ty Bryant, Sociology and Anthropology Master’s student
- Bo Min Keum, Criminology PhD student
- Regina Baeza Martinez, Sociology and Anthropology Master’s student
- Vienna Lam, Criminology PhD student
- Neha Nandakumar, Philosophy Master’s student
- Marion Benkaiouche, Urban Studies Master’s student
- Tatiana Parrish, Political Science Master’s student
- Becky White, Gerontology PhD student
These students are making newfound connections and bringing about positive change in Asian-Indigenous relations, migrant farmwork, and feminist mobilization. Their research covers sensitive and timely topics such as ethics in technology and aging, disinformation warfare, incel research, and hurt feelings. They are even saving lives through their research on downing prevention, disaster response, and lung health for vulnerable communities.
These students are project managers, conceptual artists, philosophers, analysts, archivists, community-engaged researchers, cybercrime researchers, and have received recognition through institutional, national, and international awards and publications. Collaborating with experts in China, Taiwan, Japan, Guatemala, Australia, the UK, the US, and across Canada’s urban, rural, and Indigenous communities, these students are actively mobilizing knowledge globally and applying it locally.
With over 750 graduate students currently studying in FASS, there are many more spotlights to come. Be sure to check back!
