Grad School 101: How to Apply Webinar

Get your application questions answered during this webinar featuring key SFU Faculty of Graduate Studies staff members as well as representatives of some of the graduate programs listed below.

Master's Program

Criminology

There are a number of options for students interested in pursuing a master's (MA) degree within the School of Criminology. Students may complete a traditional MA by coursework and thesis. Those who wish to engage in a practicum experience and/or pursue applied/evaluation research, may do so within the MA program. 

Many of our students continue on to a PhD program or pursue a career in research, policy analysis, or teaching.

Doctoral Program

Criminology

Our PhD program has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence, challenging students to achieve their full academic and research potential. Students entering the PhD program will have opportunities to conduct research with internationally renowned faculty members. The School also provides teaching opportunities for PhD candidates.

The doctoral program involves coursework, comprehensive examinations, and completion of a PhD thesis.

Master's Program

Economics

Join us for an MA Program Info Session hosted by professor and graduate chair Kevin Schnepel. The full-time SFU Economics MA program provides training in a wide range of theoretical, empirical, and policy-relevant fields. It is designed to prepare students for a career in the public or the private sector, or to pursue further studies in a PhD program. Students choose between a Project Option or a Thesis Option. Master's Program

Global Humanities 

The Global Humanities MA Program is designed for students wishing to pursue specific cross-disciplinary, text- and problem-based research projects that culminate in a well-written, high-quality, and satisfying thesis. The program prepares students for more than just doctoral work. Our graduates have built a wide range of careers, including primary, secondary, and college education, editing and publishing, media industries, and public and civil service. Through its rigorous training in critical thinking, interpretive and documentary methods, and effective writing and speaking, the Global Humanities MA Program cultivates skills essential to almost every profession.

Master's Program

International Studies

The MA in International Studies (MAIS) at SFU prepares students to meaningfully influence knowledge, policy, and action in Canada and around the world. As a MAIS student, you will benefit from small-size classes with world-class experts addressing global problems through interdisciplinary approaches; funding support for tuition, research travel, and professional opportunities; practical training in research, policy analysis, and communications; and personalized mentorship and professional development focused to your goals.

MAIS graduates work locally and around the world with governments, non-governmental organizations, international agencies, and thinktanks, leading action on human rights, conflict resolution, environmental protection, economic development and trade, diplomacy, and community empowerment.

Master's Program

Public Policy

The Master's in Public Policy program is for those who are passionate about shaping public policy, who seek to develop their leadership skills, and who aspire to make an impact in government, nonprofit, or private sectors. Ideal candidates are those with a strong interest in political science, economics, and research methods, and who are committed to creating meaningful change in public policy. The program blends interdisciplinary academics with practical experience through co-op placements and joint projects. Graduates excel in analyzing data, evaluating policies, and addressing issues like climate change, inequality, and global governance.

Graduate Diploma & Master's Program

Urban Studies

Discover how to make cities better with SFU Urban Studies graduate programs. Most of our courses take place once a week in the evenings, running for four hours at SFU’s downtown Vancouver campus. This schedule makes the program an excellent choice for working professionals seeking to enhance their careers through further education.
