Educational Research Developer

Transforming Inquiry into Learning and Teaching (TILT) at 91ÅÝܽ (SFU) invites applications for a full-time, continuing Educational Research Developer, reporting to the TILT director. We are seeking a collaborative and creative scholar-practitioner with expertise in educational research and a passion for advancing evidence-informed teaching and learning.

Working as part of a supportive and dynamic team, the Educational Research Developer will play a central role in fostering a culture of inquiry into learning and teaching at SFU. This role focuses on two key areas:

  1. Supporting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): Collaborating with faculty and other participants to design, conduct, and share SoTL projects; providing mentorship on research design and methods; and supervising a team of research assistants working on internal and grant-funded initiatives.
  2. Contributing to Strategic Initiatives and Institutional Impact: Designing and delivering programming that supports teaching and learning inquiry; representing TILT in broader university and external initiatives; and developing partnerships aligned with institutional priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to participants engaging in inquiry projects, including research design, data collection and analysis, and dissemination.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and resources related to teaching and learning inquiry.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of research assistants working on SoTL and evaluation projects.
  • Lead and contribute to evaluation and research initiatives within TILT and across the University.
  • Develop and manage internal and external research projects and funding proposals.
  • Represent TILT on institutional, provincial, and national committees and networks.
  • Cultivate partnerships that support SFU’s teaching and learning priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

An ideal candidate will have:

  • A Master’s or PhD in a field related to educational research, such as educational psychology, learning sciences, qualitative/quantitative methods, or a discipline with a strong SoTL practice.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting or supporting educational research or SoTL in a post-secondary context.
  • Strong knowledge of research methods (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) and the ability to support others in applying them.
  • Knowledge of evidence-informed pedagogical practices and the ability to support others in reflecting on or improving their teaching.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring a team of research personnel or students.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.

TILT is a small team that works closely together, and with the SFU community, to transform inquiry into learning and teaching by creating opportunities and entry ways for faculty, instructors, staff, and students to engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

This is a full-time continuing position with a flexible hybrid work schedule. The successful candidate must be able to report to all three SFU campuses regularly. The anticipated start date for the position is October 15, 2025 (flexible).

The Educational Research Developer is a Learning and Teaching Development Member (LTDM). LTDMs are members of the SFU Faculty Association. Terms, conditions and benefits of employment are outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement re: Teaching and Learning Development Members dated October 31, 2024 (MOA) and the 2022-25 SFUFA/SFU Collective Agreement. LTDMs are responsible for the development, creation, and delivery of scholarly and curricular initiatives and/or community-based partnerships in support of the learning and teaching priorities of the University. In addition, LTDMs contribute to their unit, the University and the academic community at large through service

This Learning and Teaching Development (LTD) position recently became part of the 91ÅÝܽ Faculty Association (SFUFA) bargaining unit. While most terms of employment for the LTDMs have been established in a Memorandum of Agreement, the salary scale for this position is currently being negotiated. Until negotiations are complete, the prior scale (APSA Grade 11) will be used and salary placement will be commensurate with academic achievement and previous relevant and related experience. Once a final SFUFA salary scale for the LTDMs is established, the salary placement will be reviewed to ensure alignment with the new scale.

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $92,654 to $110,544.
