Welcome Leigh Joseph!

Hello, My name is Dr. Leigh Joseph and my ancestral name is styawat and I am a member of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) First Nation. Through my work I contribute to cultural knowledge renewal in connection to Indigenous plant and land-based relationships.

My research is motivated by giving back to Indigenous communities, and to the land, through supporting the reconnection to land-based and plant-based knowledge and access. I explore how culturally important plants and places, and the knowledge associated with them, support healing from intergenerational trauma and empower Indigenous Peoples and communities to define their own land-based health and wellness practices.

I'm so happy to be an assistant professor in the geography department. I look forward to continuing to carry out meaningful community-engaged research in my home territory.
