Mathematics Major Program (Bachelor of Arts)

91ÅÝܽ Calendar 2011 Summer

This program leads to a bachelor of arts (BA) degree.

Prerequisite Grade Requirement

To enrol in a course offered by the Department of Mathematics, a student must obtain a grade of C- or better in each prerequisite course. Some courses may require higher prerequisite grades. Check the MATH courses’ Calendar description for details.

Students will not normally be permitted to enrol in any course for which a D grade or lower was obtained in any prerequisite. No student may complete, for further credit, any course offered by the Department of Mathematics which is a prerequisite for a course the student has already completed with a grade of C- or higher, without permission of the department.

Program Requirements

Students complete 120 units, including either

  • CMPT 126-3 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming

or both of

  • CMPT 120-3 Introduction to Computing Science and Programming I
  • CMPT 125-3 Introduction to Computing Science and Programming II

and one of

  • MATH 150-4 Calculus I with Review
  • MATH 151-3 Calculus I

and all of

  • MACM 101-3 Discrete Mathematics I
  • MACM 201-3 Discrete Mathematics II
  • MACM 202-4 Mathematical Modeling and Computation
  • MATH 152-3 Calculus II
  • MATH 232-3 Elementary Linear Algebra
  • MATH 242-3 Introduction to Analysis I
  • MATH 251-3 Calculus III
  • STAT 270-3 Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Note: With a C grade or better in relevant courses, these substitutions are permitted: MATH 154 or 157 for 151, MATH 155 or 158 for 152. Also, with a B grade or better, MATH 232 for 240. However, where possible, students are strongly encouraged to complete MATH 151, 152 and 240.

Upper Division Requirements

Students complete a total of 12 units, including at least one of

  • MATH 308-3 Linear Optimization
  • MATH 343-3 Applied Discrete Mathematics
  • MATH 345-3 Introduction to Graph Theory

and at least one of

  • MATH 320-3 Introduction to Analysis II
  • MATH 322-3 Complex Variables

and at least one of

  • MATH 338-3 Advanced Linear Algebra
  • MATH 341-3 Algebra III: Groups
  • MATH 342-3 Elementary Number Theory

and at least one of

  • MATH 310-3 Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations
  • MACM 316-3 Numerical Analysis I

The remaining 18, of the required 30 upper division units in the Mathematics (BA) major program, must be chosen from the following, or any combination of the following.

  • any upper division MATH courses
  • any upper division MACM courses
  • PHYS 413
  • STAT 330, 350, 380, 402, 430, 450, 460

Of these 30 UNITS, at least 24 must be MATH or MACM courses. At least three of the courses used to satisfy this must be 400 division, of which at least two must be 400 division MATH or MACM courses. Students may not use a directed studies, job practicum, or honours essay course to fulfil the 400 division requirement.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Requirements

In addition to the above requirements, students must also satisfy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences BA requirements, general University CGPA, and unit requirements.

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to 91ÅÝܽ beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

Additional breadth units must be from outside the student's major and may be B-designated (B-Hum, B-Soc, B-Sci courses). Students choosing to complete a joint major, joint honors, double major, two extended minors, an extended minor and a minor, or two minors may satisfy the breadth requirements (designated or not designated) with courses completed in either one or both program areas.
