It was an exciting morning as members of the Burnaby Mountain community and UniverCity residents gathered to celebrate the official opening of the City of Burnaby's Fire Station 8.

The event welcomed an energetic crowd eager to explore the fire hall, meet local firefighters, see the latest gear and enjoy a community barbecue hosted by the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society. The celebration was a major step forward in safety and preparedness for the entire Burnaby Mountain area.

SFU President Joy Johnson spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of the fire station’s proximity to the university.

“As SFU and UniverCity continue to grow together, it is critical that we have strong emergency response support on Burnaby Mountain,” says SFU President Joy Johnson. “We are grateful for the City of Burnaby’s ongoing commitment to the safety of students, faculty, staff and UniverCity residents, and excited for Fire Station 8 to be a permanent part of the community.”

The new station comes with the latest firefighting gear, including equipment for fighting wildfires, so crews can jump into action quickly if one starts. It's built specifically for the mountain’s unique conditions and shows a strong commitment to keeping the community safe and prepared.

“Our Safety and Risk Services team is excited to work alongside the first responders at Fire Hall 8 to support everyone living, studying, and working on Burnaby Mountain,” says Galib Bhayani, Chief Safety and Risk Officer at SFU. “The opening of this state-of-the-art facility brings added peace of mind to our community, knowing that additional help is now closer than ever.”

This new facility is the result of a strong partnership between SFU and the City of Burnaby, supported by $30 million in federal funding. The new fire hall will significantly improve emergency response times, especially in situations where access to the mountain has previously been delayed by weather or traffic.

Now that Fire Station 8 is officially open, the Burnaby Mountain community can count on faster, closer, and more reliable emergency support when it matters most.
