Title: Use of single-dose testosterone administration protocols to unravel the role of testosterone in modulating human aggression and mating psychology
Abstract: A wealth of work in animal models suggest that testosterone plays an important role in promoting aggression and mating behaviour. Correlational work with human participants suggests a relatively weak and inconsistent positive correlation between baseline testosterone concentrations and various indices of aggression and mating psychology/behaviour. More compelling correlational work suggests that acute, context-dependent changes in testosterone concentrations are more strongly linked to aggression and mating psychology. Over the past decade, my lab has developed pharmacological challenge paradigms to test whether testosterone plays a causal role in modulating aggression and mating psychology/behaviour. In this talk I will review evidence indicating that a single dose of testosterone has relatively rapid effects on psychological and behavioural processes relevant to aggression and mating psychology. In addition, I will discuss personality and contextual factors that play a key role in moderating the effects of testosterone on these psychological and behavioural processes.
