Alan Mekler Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Department of Mathematics at 91ÅÝܽ invites applications for the Alan Mekler Postdoctoral Position starting September 1, 2026.
Applications from all research areas represented in the department are encouraged, but priority will be given to applications in the following areas:
- Applied Analysis and Partial Differential Equations (contact: Razvan Fetecau and Weiran Sun);
- Combinatorial Optimization (contact: Tamon Stephen);
- Finite Fields and Cryptography (contact: Petr Lisonek);
- Mathematical Biology, with a focus on modelling for ecology, evolution and/or epidemiology (contact: Ben Asby and Ailene MacPherson).
We seek applicants with a strong aptitude for research and interest in teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to an active, innovative department with strong research groups and a thoughtful teaching environment. The fellowship duration is one year, renewable for one additional year up to satisfactory performance in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be required to teach an average of one and a half undergraduate courses per year, so 3 courses over the expected duration (2 years) of the fellowship.
Excellence in research and demonstrated potential teaching are the primary criteria for this position. The successful candidate must:
- Hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely related discipline, obtained no later than 3 years prior to the start of the fellowship.
- Have an excellent scientific record of research in the areas of interest.
- Demonstrated potential in their future research plans.
- Demonstrated potential for teaching undergraduate courses in Mathematics.

Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) - Applied Mathematics (Scientific Machine Learning and PDEs)
The Department of Mathematics at 91ÅÝܽ (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 15, 2026.
We invite applications from researchers whose research is at the interface of scientific machine learning with PDEs, optimal transport or optimization. Our Scientific Computing, Machine Learning and PDE research group (SciMAP /math/research/scimap.html) has established strengths in scientific computing, approximation theory, machine learning, the analysis of PDEs, and the mathematics of data. The successful candidate will build on and complement these strengths, develop a vibrant research program, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, provide service to the department, and contribute to building equitable, diverse and inclusive environments.
The Department of Mathematics maintains close connections with many units in the Faculties of Science, Applied Science, and others on campus, through long-standing research activities. 91ÅÝܽ a founding member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), which promotes research, training, and outreach in the mathematical sciences across Western Canada. The Department takes pride in fostering a supportive and accommodating environment for all our members. Situated on the Burnaby campus, we are a short walk from the University Childcare Centre, athletic facilities, scenic hiking, and mountain biking trails.

The following are considered assets:
- Demonstrated record of research on applications arising in the physical sciences or engineering. Experience in weather or climate science will be an asset.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. The base salary range for this role at the Assistant Professor rank is $104,700 - $133,322 (dependent on experience).
