Health Sciences student awards

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) offers annual undergraduate awards to recognize outstanding students in FHS’ Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programs. The number of FHS awards granted will vary depending on the applicant pool and the award category.

General Criteria for SFU Awards

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 and be in good academic standing. 

 

Submitting Applications

Further instructions on how to submit an award application will be provided to students during specified dates throughout the year.

Applications will be reviewed by the office of the FHS Undergraduate Programs and nominations will then be submitted to the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee (SUAAC) for final selection and granting of the awards. Successful recipients will be contacted by SFU's Financial Aid and Awards office through email.

Faculty of Health Sciences Undergraduate Student Awards

Nomination applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) undergraduate student awards. FHS offers annual undergraduate  awards to recognize outstanding students in FHS’ Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programs. Each of the FHS awards described below may be given to no students, one student, or multiple students each year, depending on the applicant pool.

Nominations may be made by students, staff, or faculty, and a student may be nominated and/or apply for more than one award. Nominations and application materials should be sent to Belinda Chao, Undergraduate Program Assistant, at undergrad_assistant@sfu.ca by 23:59 on May 27, 2025. Only the award recipients will be contacted through email.

  • FHS Award for Citizenship and Exemplary Academic Performance
  • FHS Award for Outstanding Service to the Faculty of Health Sciences
  • FHS Award for Outstanding Community Service
  • FHS Award for Extraordinary Achievement

 

In addition to the above awards, FHS will honour students with awards based on academic achievement. Nominations or applications for these awards are not accepted, as they are based solely on cumulative grade point average, and are listed here for your information only:

  • FHS Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, BSc
  • FHS Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, BA

Past awards

Edoye Porbeni Service Equals Success Award

  • One award valued at $1,230 awarded to a first-year undergraduate student enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in the Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Demonstrated history of community service and involvement during high school

Dr. Jack Uppal Award

  • Three awards valued at $2,350 each
  • Demonstrate excellence in community/volunteer services

Pula Award in Health Sciences

  • This award, valued at $1,400, will be granted to an undergraduate student with an approved major or Honours in the Faculty of Health Science
  • Demonstrated history of or interest in doing research work in the area of HIV/AIDS. Preference is given to students in their 3rd or 4th year of study

Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation Award in Health Sciences

  • One award valued at $2,000 will be granted to a 4th year undergraduate student majoring in the Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Student has volunteered in a hospital or healthcare setting

Joanne Tattle Award in Health Sciences

  • One award valued at $10,000
  • The student has interest to pursue a career in medicine, health care, public health or health and wellness and demonstrate volunteer service in helping others.

Patrick D. Morawski Memorial Award for Ethical Engagement

One award valued at $2,000, will be granted this year to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • is enrolled full-time with a major in any program within the Faculty of Health Sciences at SFU; 
  • is in good academic standing;
  • has demonstrated leadership to advancing an understanding of public health ethics and advocating for vulnerable populations, and those with a career interest within the health profession.

Note: Preference will be given to students entering their final year of study

Applications MUST include:

  • a one page statement from the applicant outlining their year of study, their leadership in activities dedicated to advancing an understanding of public health ethics, advocating for social justice and vulnerable populations, and their interest in a career within the health profession
  • a current resume or CV from the applicant
  • a letter of reference from a person in a leadership role who can verify the applicant's leadership and achievements in advancing an understanding of public health ethics and their likelihood to pursue a successful career within the health profession.

Lina's Dream Award in Health Sciences

  • One award valued at $10,000
  • Expressed interest in pursuing a career in medicine, health care, public health or health and wellness
  • Demonstrated volunteer service in helping others
  • Applicant must be enrolled in their first year of a Faculty of Health Sciences program

Applications MUST include:

  • a one page statement from the applicant outlining their interest to pursue a career in medicine, health care, public health or health & wellness and what inspires them to help others
  • a CV outlining applicant's volunteer service
  • a letter of reference from an individual in a leadership role, who can verify the applicant’s volunteerism in support of helping others
  • an unofficial transcript
