Congratulations to Faculty of Health Sciences Professor Zabrina Brumme, who was one of 47 people named as a Fellow to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) earlier this week. This recognition is considered to be one of the highest honours for an individual within Canada’s academic community.

Brumme joins a group of Canada’s top health scientists and academics who volunteer their time and expertise to conduct independent, unbiased, expert assessments on health-related topics of major importance. Fellows are selected for their accomplishments in the field of health sciences, including internationally recognized leadership, academic performance, scientific creativity, and willingness to serve Canadians.

Brumme, who also serves as Laboratory Director at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE), leads a team of more than 35 researchers who study HIV genetic diversity and evolution with the ultimate goal of providing new avenues for vaccine design as well as strategies to eradicate viral reservoirs. Her work integrates molecular biology, epidemiology and computational approaches to examine questions at the interface of HIV-1 virology, immunology and pathogenesis.

At BC-CfE, Brumme additionally oversees the organization’s Laboratory Program which supports a wide range of clinical services for nearly all provinces and territories in Canada. Her leadership in this capacity is vital to the successful delivery of HIV care for tens of thousands of patients across the country.

“I am honoured to have my contributions recognized by CAHS, and I look forward to representing Canadian health sciences at home and internationally,” says Brumme.

Brumme is the seventh member of the FHS academic community to be inducted as a Fellow into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. An investiture ceremony will be held for the 2025 inductees later this year.
