This Valentine's Day 鉂わ笍馃尮, we're excited to share an incredible story from SFU Beedie students and about their unforgettable experience studying abroad together. 馃懇鈥嶁潳锔忊�嶐煈� Read the tale as told by Joaquin below! 馃洬

鉂� From January to June 2023, my girlfriend, Annie, and I went on an exchange semester together at the University of Amsterdam (UVA). Studying abroad had always been a dream for both of us, as we both loved for travel. In high school, we had each went on exchanges to Peru and Chile.

Despite facing setbacks with our initial two attempts to study abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we kept trying. On our third application, we were ecstatic to receive an email 100% confirming our exchange to UVA. Funny enough, we both received the email on our 3rd anniversary (October 14, 2022).

Fast forward to our exchange, we were very fortunate to live together in one of Amsterdam's most beautiful neighbourhoods in Jordaan for five months. We were able to experience new cultures, make lifelong friends from all over the world, and even had the opportunity to travel to 15 different countries. It was truly the best time of our lives.

Studying abroad was genuinely one of the biggest highlights of my undergraduate journey and arguably my entire life. The unforgettable memories, friends, and the lessons learned are treasures I will carry with me for the rest of my life. 鉂�

Are you interested in learning about how sustainable development will shape the future of the global world, and participate in a one-week residency in Thailand or Malaysia? Join the The鈥疉PRU SDG Education for Global Citizenship this summer. 馃審馃崈馃嚬馃嚟馃嚥馃嚲

The鈥疉PRU SDG Education for Global Citizenship (APRU SDG4GC) is an intercultural, trans-disciplinary, and interactive program that fosters global citizenship among students from 60 universities in 20 economies across the Pacific Rim. Co-designed by six core-partner universities in collaboration with the United Nations (UN), the program builds knowledge of global issues and global literacy among students. This is achieved through learning about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), exploring in-depth some of the world鈥檚 biggest challenges, and proposing solutions using a framework for collaborative development of social innovation prototypes. The program places critical importance in introducing locally embedded unique case studies among the network members to help students develop a broad array of perspectives and deepen understanding of the SDGs.

"I was wracked with nerves in the months leading up to my exchange in Grenoble, France. I was afraid of the loneliness, isolation, and arduous acclimation that I felt were standard for any transition to a new environment. And yet, within only a couple of weeks on exchange, I felt at home. The friends that I found, the conversations that I held, the experiences that I had, and the memories that I made will be with me for the rest of my life. If fear is keeping you from going on exchange, I urge you to push past it. It is a fantastic experience."
