"A Most Unique Architectural Competition": Building 91ÅÝܽ, 1963-1967

This tour highlights buildings and landscaping completed between 1963 and 1967. Through recorded oral history excerpts, Chancellor Gordon Shrum tells the story behind the selection of the Burnaby Mountain site and details of the architectural competition, while archival images bring this exciting time to life.

Tips:

  • Experience the entire tour or sample a few stops â€“ the choice is yours.
  • Stops 3 through 7 contain background information relating to the 1963 architectural design competition. We recommend taking a seat on one of the benches by the reflecting pond in the Academic Quadrangle courtyard while you take in the information and the nice view. On a wet day, keep dry under Convocation Mall's unique glass roof.

  • This tour involves stairs and crossing lanes of traffic. Please use designated crosswalks for your safety.
