"A Most Unique Architectural Competition": Building 91ÅÝܽ, 1963-1967
Discover the inspirations and personalities behind 91ÅÝܽ's unique architecture, uncovering fun facts as you make your way around campus, virtually or in-person.
This tour highlights buildings and landscaping completed between 1963 and 1967. Through recorded oral history excerpts, Chancellor Gordon Shrum tells the story behind the selection of the Burnaby Mountain site and details of the architectural competition, while archival images bring this exciting time to life.
Tips:
- Experience the entire tour or sample a few stops – the choice is yours.
- Stops 3 through 7 contain background information relating to the 1963 architectural design competition. We recommend taking a seat on one of the benches by the reflecting pond in the Academic Quadrangle courtyard while you take in the information and the nice view. On a wet day, keep dry under Convocation Mall's unique glass roof.
- Read the text or listen to it using the audio recording at the top of each screen.
- This tour involves stairs and crossing lanes of traffic. Please use designated crosswalks for your safety.
- Test your new-found knowledge at the end with a quiz.
Enjoy the tour!
