Ann Hui in Conversation - Fractured Dreams and Silent Strength: Female Identity in Eighteen Springs and Ann Hui's other films
On Wednesday, September 17, we had the honor of hosting legendary Chinese filmmaker Ann Hui.
True to her reputation, Ann captivated students and faculty with decades of wisdom in the art of storytelling. With warmth and insight, she shared how her films explore women navigating familial, romantic, and societal challenges.
After a brief welcome message from WLL Chair, Jia Fei, Ann Hui gave a brief presentation of her work and journey as a film director - pictured above. She then setup and reviewed three short clips from the film Eighteen Springs - pictured below.
She then engaged in conversation about how she translated Eileen Zhang’s literary sensibilities into cinematic language, bringing to life female characters defined by longing, loss, and quiet strength. Drawing on Eighteen Springs and her wider filmography, Ann shared her ideas of women navigating familial, romantic, and societal challenges. The event will featured an exploration of Hui’s dedication to portraying women as complex, fully realized individuals; as the conversation led to the Q&A segment of the program.
A heartfelt thank-you to Director Ann Hui and to the Chinese Canadian Museum for their incredible collaboration and support.
