SFU Benefits for Retirees

The following benefits are received by faculty and staff who retired from SFU and require verification of retirement from SFU employment through SFU's records.

SFURA Members Parking Passes

  • This complimentary parking for SFU retirees is valid up to five (5) times per month per person.
  • You no longer need to display a SFURA membership card to park for free on the Burnaby campus.
  • The Parking Office now has an Online Retirees Permit System for Burnaby campus parking. If you park on campus, you are asked to email parking@sfu.ca and request to be registered. Give your name and licence plate(s) — up to two allowed. 
  • If you subsequently change any of your plates, you are asked to let parking@sfu.ca know.
  • Please note, you can park in any unreserved (first come first served) spot in the North, South, or East lots, the West parkade, the upper (visitors) level of the Central Parkade and Discovery 1.
  • For the chargers on the bottom floor of the Central Parkade — only those who hold a Central Parkade permit can park there during regular business hours. Everyone else (including SFURA members) can only park there evenings (after 4:30 pm) and weekends.

If you are a retired faculty member, you may be eligible for a . If you need an SFURA membership card to prove that you are eligible for an SFU Emeritus parking permit, please email retirees@sfu.ca.

Access to SFU Burnaby Recreational Services

Your retiree package from HR will have contained a note that you can continue to have access to SFU recreation facilities. To activate your membership, bring your SFU ID card or employee number and fill out a waiver at the SFU Burnaby Recreation Office. You will receive a receipt for $0 paid for a “community membership.”

Access to the SFU Library

SFU Retirees continue to enjoy access to the SFU Library with your SFU ID card. This includes subscription services such as academic journals and databases. 

Lifelong SFU email address

SFU Retirees enjoy the continued use of their @sfu.ca email account from when they were employed.

Pacific Blue Cross | April 1, 2023 email from SFU HR

After careful review and consideration, SFURA has made the decision to improve retirees Pacific Blue Cross extended health care benefits to better support the retirees and their families. These improvements include:

  1. Paramedical coverage from individual maximum to a combined maximum of $2,500 per year including Acupuncture, Chiropractor, Massage, Naturopath, Physiotherapy, Podiatrist, Psychology, Speech Language Pathologist and removing the per visit maximum for Chiropractor,  Massage, Naturopath, Physiotherapy, and Podiatrist;
  2. Add Registered Clinical Counsellors and  Social Workers to Psychologist/Counselling Services under paramedical practitioner coverage;
  3. Add Vaccine coverage excluding travel vaccines; 
  4. Add Erectile Dysfunction Drugs;
  5. Accept *;  and
  6. Increase Hearing Aid maximum from $625 per 60 months to $1,100 in any three calendar years  for adults.   

*Blue RX is a customized drug plan based on a managed formulary. Plain and simple, a formulary is a list of covered drugs. It is called a “managed” formulary because drugs are reviewed to ensure they are both clinically and cost effective before they are added to the plan

The Blue RX drug plan provides you with safe, high quality prescription drugs at an affordable price while you, your plan sponsor, and Pacific Blue Cross work together to manage the rising cost of drug expenses. See attached document for more information. 

While these improvements are certainly exciting, I want to let you know that there will be a corresponding increase in the monthly premium for the extended health care benefits. The new premium rate will be effective starting April 1, 2023:

Members of Class 1 and Class 2 are required to pay 50% and 100%, respectively, of the rates listed below.

Please note that there is no change in the monthly premium for the dental benefits.

We understand that this change may impact your budget, and we want to assure you that we have taken into consideration the financial well-being of our retirees when making this decision.
