Synopsis
Triboluminescence, the emission of light from materials under mechanical stress, is a property common to many materials. Triboluminescent materials offer applications as damage sensors, portable X-ray sources, and light sources, with researchers in materials science, chemistry and physics studying both fundamental and applied triboluminescent systems. Despite this, the underlying mechanism of triboluminescence remains poorly understood. In this talk, I will discuss select theories of the triboluminescence mechanism and survey current research.
