REM 200 Introduction to Resource and Environmental Management in Canada
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: January 5 to April 28, 2026
Lectures: Monday and Wednesday, 9:30 am to 10:20 am
Salary: $5,902.00 for 2 weekly contact hours
Course Description: Explores the natural and social science foundations of resource and environmental management and demonstrates how that knowledge can be used in environmental decision-making in Canada. Provides a basic understanding of the nature and management of natural resources, including Indigenous resource management issues in a Canadian context. Consideration is given to strategic thinking for environmental planning, socio-economic and biophysical trade-offs in natural resource decision-making and approaches for addressing uncertain knowledge
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree, PhD preferred; ABD candidates will be considered.
- A breadth of knowledge of natural resource management and planning systems and current issues in Canada. Knowledge of the following topics with expertise in 1 or 2 of the following topics:
- Indigenous governance and management.
- Foresty
- Fisheries
- Nature-based tourism
- Food systems
- Sustainable energy and transportation
- Protected Areas
- Water management
- Urban environmental management and resilience
- Natural and social science methods
- Sustainable planning and governance
- Relevant experience in teaching/ research related to the topics above.
- Experience with experiential and/or case-based learning preferred.

REM 221 Systems Thinking and the Environment
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: January 5 to April 28, 2026
Lectures: Monday, 12:30 pm to 2:20 pm
Salary: $5,902.00 for 2 weekly contact hours
Course Description: Introduces systems thinking in the context of environmental and sustainability challenges using system archetypes and system dynamics theory. Analytical and modeling techniques are applied to understand and project systems complexity. Emphasis is placed on using systems thinking concepts to finding solutions in a complex world.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree, PhD preferred; ABD candidates will be considered.
- Experience applying or teaching systems thinking concepts within environmental or other contexts.
- Familiar with systems thinking modelling and communication tools.
- Experience with experiential and/or case-based learning preferred.
- Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (e.g., student reviews, other references).

REM 642 Sustainable Community Planning and Regional Development
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: January 5 to April 28, 2026
Lectures: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 am to 11:20 am
Salary: $9,534.00 for 4 weekly contact hours
Course Description: Theory and techniques of regional analysis; planning models and their application to key resource sectors.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in Planning, Resource and Environmental Management or related field, PhD preferred.
- Professional experience in community and/or regional planning.
- Knowledge of the following topics:
a) The history, central problems, theories and methods of community and regional planning and development in Canada.
b) Canadian federal, provincial (BC), and local government laws, policies and contemporary practices related to planning.
c) Environmental and sustainability-related innovations in regional and community planning.
d) Indigenous planning approaches and decolonization of the planning profession in practice.
e) Planning research and professional planning competencies in BC. - Experience with experiential and /or case-based learning preferred.
- Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (i.e., student reviews, other references).

The TBM-CaN lab in the School of Resource and Environmental Management is seeking an upper-level undergraduate or graduate Research Assistant to support research on modelling terrestrial biosphere–climate interactions. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with CLASSIC, Canada’s state-of-the-art terrestrial biosphere model, and to gain hands-on experience with high-performance computing.
Responsibilities:
- Set up and configure CLASSIC (Canadian Land Surface Scheme including Biogeochemical Cycles) on the Digital Research Alliance of Canada (DRAC) supercomputing platform.
- Test and troubleshoot model runs.
- Document workflows and assist in preparing reproducible scripts for future use by lab members.
Qualifications:
- Preferred experience with high-performance computing systems (e.g., DRAC clusters) and FORTRAN 90.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
- Interest in climate, ecosystems, or Earth system science is an asset, but not required.
Position Details:
- Hours: ~10 hours per week for 3 months with possibility of extension
- Start date: ASAP
- Compensation: $25-30/hour depending on experience and degree level
