SFU Fuel Cell Research Lab (FCReL)

Charting a path to net-zero, our objective is to develop viable hydrogen energy technologies through well-recognized, community-engaged research and training.

Our Research / What We Do

At the SFU Fuel Cell Research Lab (FCReL), we perform cutting-edge research on hydrogen energy technologies as a complement to renewable electricity. We focus on the electrochemical energy conversion processes that link hydrogen and electricity, namely fuel cells and water electrolysis. We develop scalable fabrication methods, advanced diagnostic tools, X-ray visualization techniques, and novel cell design concepts with improved functionality for PEM and AEM fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Our work covers the full spectrum of hydrogen energy systems from production and compression to storage and utilization, with the aim to improve the cost-effectiveness of hydrogen energy use in our society.
