Activity Descriptions (Choose three when you register, one for each time slot)
Environmental Science
Solving the climate crisis: Get the tea on the impacts of fossil fuels and how we can reduce carbon emissions
Watch what happens when fossil fuels infiltrate our oceans right before your eyes through a live demonstration of ocean acidification. Then, after learning about three different carbon reduction solutions ranging from individual actions, to policy interventions, to technological geoengineering, see if you can reason your way to the best one and convince the rest of the group.
Session 1 and 2 only
Physical Geography
Earthquake myths and reality — what does geoscience really say about the earthquake threat in Vancouver?
We’ve all done the drills to prepare for what happens during an earthquake, but what hazards should we expect after one? And how likely is an earthquake in southwestern B.C.? In this session, you’ll get to see exactly what happens during a large magnitude earthquake and test how architecture and physical geography impact how much buildings will shake. Plus, learn how to understand the expert estimates of when the next big one will happen.
Session 3 only
Geographic Information Science
From hoverboarding on Mars, to lasers of the lost art: adventures of an applied GIScientist
GIScience technology and methods are evolving in exciting new ways, opening the door for us to explore Earth’s ancient civilizations, its terranean, subterranean and aquatic environments — and even other planets. In this session, find out how GIScientists use this technology to capture, visualize and simulate spaces like never before.

Resource and Environmental Management — Planning
Creating sustainable communities: Think like a city planner
In this fast-paced session, you will play the role of a city planner on a team tasked with creating a 15-minute neighbourhood in a community near you. Learn about the biggest trends driving growth and change in communities and how planners bend and balance these trends. You might already be familiar with buzzwords like, “transit-oriented”, “missing middle housing”, “nature-based solutions”, “food justice” and “social infrastructure”; now see what happens when planners work together to put these terms into action.
Session 2 only
Resource and Environmental Management
Wildfire: the good, the bad and the ugly
Did you know that there is such a thing as a good wildfire? In this interactive discussion, led by an expert in wildfire research, learn the good, the bad and the ugly facts about wildfires and how researchers are helping communities prepare for and live with them as their severity and frequency rises in B.C. and Canada.
Session 1 only
Archaeology
Secrets of the dead: Solve a mystery like a forensic anthropologist
Step into the role of a forensic investigator to explore the worlds of bioarchaeology and physical anthropology. Your first challenge? Carefully identify and reassemble a replica human skeleton using reference materials, critical thinking and teamwork. Then, analyze the skeleton’s bone trauma and contextual evidence to determine a plausible cause of death.
Session 1 and 2 (Session 3 full)
Human Geography
The secret life of the anchovy, the most important fish in the world?
Humans might shape the world around us, but the natural world is shaping us, too. In geography, researchers study this interaction closely, and in this session, so will you — up close, through the eyes of the small, unexpectedly important fish caught in the middle.
(Session full)
Urban Worlds
Dynamic places and urban spaces: See how cities change through the eyes of a geographer
What do our cities reveal about us? And what exactly is gentrification? In this session, explore the dynamic urban spaces you think you know from a new, multidisciplinary perspective. Plus, learn about the social, spatial and political aspects of urban change. You might never look at a city the same way again.
Session 3 only
Campus tour
Tour the heart of SFU's Burnaby Campus
Explore SFU's Burnaby campus on a tour led by current Faculty of Environment students. Your guides will take you to key student spaces and resources like the SFU Library, Career and Volunteer Services, campus gardens, Convocation Mall, the SFU Bookstore and more while dropping useful information and advice for university.
