Forensic research symposium centres archaeology and criminology student learning, research and collaboration
What forensic information can we learn from teeth? Can we use ground penetrating radar to find buried remains?
These are just two of the topics covered by speakers at the 9th Annual Symposium for the Centre for Forensic Research (CFR).
The day-long symposium, held on February 2nd, 2024, was partially funded that year by a Spark Grant obtained by archaeology professor Hugo Cardoso.
Each year, the Department of Archaeology and SFU's School of Criminology collaborate to host the event, which features guest speakers across various institutions, including BCIT and the Institute of Health Sciences – CESPU (Portugal).
Most presenters are students from SFU, providing them with an opportunity to share their research and network with peers and professionals, practice their communication skills and discover potential collaborations.
“Students are an important an integral component of this symposium,” Cardoso writes in a report on the event. “They are the core of the organizing committee.”
The 2024 event drew an estimate of 70–80 in-person attendees and 20 online attendees, which included students from SFU, BCIT, Douglas College and abroad, as well as professionals from the BC Coroner’s Service, the RCMP and STANTEC.
The 2025 event this past February marked the Symposium’s 10-year anniversary, and Cardoso says the reputation of the symposium and the CFR continues to grow.
