Work at FCAT
The School of Interactive Arts and Technology, is an interdisciplinary research focused school where technologists, artists, designers and theorists collaborate in innovative research and immersive study. The School of Communication emphasizes critical thinking, reading, analysis and production while studying media and technology from a critical perspective, focusing on big data and technology studies, media and culture. The meeting of creative practice with academic inquiry is core to the School for the Contemporary Arts, which works to foster artists and scholars who are equipped to engage with and contribute to important contemporary dialogues, issues, and challenges. As the only postgraduate Publishing Program in Canada, our program is the premier training ground for publishing professionals where students are equipped with the tools they need to excel in the publishing industry. The Master of Digital Media is Canada’s first professional graduate program in digital media.
Positions
FCAT Associate Dean Research - Research Assistant
The Associate Dean, Research, in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) at 91ܽ seeking an SFU student research assistant to assist with varied tasks, including:
- Create graphs and charts from existing data (data may require some preparation);
- Proofread and lay out research-related documents;
- Gather information and conduct research as required to improve our delivery of services to faculty members, develop and maintain a strategic research plan for the Faculty, develop and modify policies, etc.;
- Develop information sheets to assist faculty members in understanding Faculty-based research processes and resources;
- Identify and add relevant information to the FCAT research website;
- Assist the FCAT communications team in preparing stories about faculty member research successes and grants.
- Miscellaneous tasks as required.
Required skills:
- Meticulous attention to detail;
- Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize data;
- Familiarity with Excel and willingness to learn more;
- Web design and content writing;
- Ability to work independently.
Supervision:
FCAT Associate Dean Research and FCAT Research Facilitator
Working arrangements:
The work is expected to be conducted in fall 2025 and spring 2026 at a rate of CAD$25-$40/hour (commensurate with experience). The chosen candidate should be highly motivated and able to work remotely under limited supervision. However, if needed, office space is available at the Vancouver Campus of SFU.
The position is for up to 150 hours, to be completed between November 3, 2025, and May 1, 2026. Working hours are flexible, with some obligation to participate in scheduled meetings.

FCAT Social Media Ambassadors
The Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology is looking for students to create engaging content for our social media channels. Ambassadors will gain valuable experience in social media content creation. With the support of communications staff in their school and FCAT’s Associate Director, Marketing & Communications, the Ambassadors will have the opportunity to execute their own creative ideas and create content to support the strategic communications goals of our schools and programs.
Position dates:
Spring term: August 25 – November 21, 2025
Time commitment: Estimated 3 hours per week
Honorarium: $300
A total of five positions are available:
- 2 Social Media Ambassadors for the School of Communication
- 2 Social Media Ambassadors for the School of Interactive Arts and Technology
- 1 Social Media Ambassador for the Publishing Program
Guidelines:
- Create video content to be shared on TikTok and Instagram Reels
- Commit to creating one video/social media post per week
- Attend student related events for the purpose of creating social media content
- Conceive, film and produce videos based on original ideas, trends, and content that would be engaging for students
- Act as a student representative on the school’s TikTok and IG accounts
- Manage school’s TikTok account, including following other accounts and liking posts
- Collaborate with the other ambassador for your school
- Include fellow students in your videos and reach out to involve student unions
- Suggest and implement innovative social media engagement ideas such as Instagram polls or incentives for new followers, social media contests, and other initiatives that encourage students to tag us, comment on, like, and share our posts.
- Integrate other social media channels into your content – for example, ambassadors will have access to the school’s Spotify account to create playlists that could be shared on the school’s social media channels. These may be based on polls or engagement from the ambassador’s video content.
- Be available via email to discuss content ideas
- Be available for an online kickoff meeting, midway check-in meeting and final debrief meeting with all ambassadors and communications staff
- Be available for regularly scheduled online meetings with school communications staff
- Visit your school’s main SFU campus to gather video content involving students (CMNS in Burnaby, SIAT in Surrey, and SCA in Vancouver).
Ambassadors should be:
- Current student in the School of Communication, School for the Contemporary Arts, or School of Interactive Arts and Technology
- Familiar with social media platforms including TikTok and Instagram
- Familiar with Spotify and enjoy creating new playlists
- Proficient in short-form video editing
- Creative self-starter
- Able to work independently
- Able to engage with fellow students and build sense of community on social media
- Able to use a smartphone to film videos and create social media posts
