Event Volunteers

Join SFU’s Community Engagement and Dialogue Unit as a volunteer!

SFU’s Community Engagement and Dialogue Unit (CE&D) supports the university and community by convening evidence-informed conversations on the world's complex challenges, and expands the capacity for mutual learning, co-creation, and shared problem solving. 

CE&D Event Volunteers will assist in hosting inclusive and transformative events with the many initiatives of the Unit including but not limited to the Centre for Dialogue and SFU Public Square.

Event Volunteers will contribute in a variety of ways such as:

  • Pre-event planning and logistics;
  • Day-of event hospitality (working the registration table, catering, room set-ups, audience management; 
  • Table facilitation and note-taking;
  • Social media, photography, composing post-event recaps and blogs;
  • and more!

Gain event-hosting, communication, and leadership skills, connect with community, and enjoy behind-the-scenes access to exciting public events — all while making a real impact.

Position and Time Commitment

This position supports the Community Engagement and Dialogue Unit’s events during a given semester, as an on call/as needed volunteer. Roles available may vary depending on event formats, allowing volunteers to gain experience in a variety of skills throughout the semester.

Time commitment: For this position, volunteers will commit to attending and supporting 2-3 upcoming events programmed during the coming semester and to staying up-to-date with the pre-event content.

Responsibilities

  • Working at the registration table, audience management/mic-running, note-taking, ushering crowds, and/or writing event recaps and blogs on an event or series.
  • Attending all mandatory training sessions, event preparation meetings, and keeping up-to-date with event information.
  • Communicating development goals, capacity, and availability with staff in a timely manner.
