emerge anthology
Since 2001, emerge has showcased the writing of students in the Writer’s Studio, featuring excerpts from our students’ manuscripts-in-progress (in fiction and non-fiction), as well as entire works of poetry and short stories. For readers, it’s an opportunity to experience new literary voices before they appear in other journals, major publications, and at your local bookstore.
For students, emerge is an opportunity to engage with the publishing process and see their writing in print. Many of our alumni have gone on to publish their manuscripts, with excerpts from those manuscripts first appearing in emerge. Below are examples of books where excerpts or early versions first appeared in our anthology.
emerge 2006: The Light a Body Radiates (Caitlin Press) by Ethel Whitty; Rage (Thistledown Press) by John Mavin
emerge 2011: Three Souls (HarperCollins) by Janie Chang
emerge 2014: Dead Reckoning (Arsenal Pulp Press) by Carys Cragg
emerge 2018: My Indian Summer (Tidewater Press) by Joseph Kakwinokanasum
