My research program leverages stem cells and 3D suspension culture systems to advance the modeling and study of human organ development and disease. Therefore, my team produces hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and cardiac organoids using novel suspension methodologies. We can also generate multilineage organoids spanning cardiac, neural, gastric and intestinal tissues and create mixed-lineage combinations—such as cardiac-neural and intestinal-neuronal assemblies—as well as multi-organ organoids resembling "organs on a string". These hiPSC-based suspension culture approaches enable systematic dissection of human cell and tissue interactions in their natural environment. We are actively developing novel organoid models to study human development and arrhythmia syndromes while assessing their potential for regenerative medicine applications. Ultimately, the goal of my laboratory is to establish new in vitro platforms that reproduce the complex cellular interactions governing organ development, function and disease.
