Sean Markey appointed as Dean, Faculty of Environment
We are pleased to share that Dr. Sean Markey, Director and Professor in SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management, will be stepping into the role of Dean of the Faculty of Environment starting August 1, 2025.
Sean brings a wealth of experience and a collaborative spirit to his new role. Over the years, he’s taken on a variety of leadership, teaching and administrative positions at SFU—including Associate Dean of the Faculty of Environment. His work has consistently focused on building strong partnerships with municipalities, non-profits, Indigenous communities and businesses to support community-based sustainable and inclusive planning and development.
He’s also been a strong advocate for Indigenization, Truth and Reconciliation, decolonization, and equity, diversity, and inclusion—values that are aligned with SFU’s priorities and are deeply reflected in both his research and leadership. Sean has published extensively and co-authored several books, further contributing to the fields of planning, community development, and environmental management.
As Associate Dean, Sean played a key role in launching a variety of FENV programs and was a champion for graduate students, helping to enhance their experience and promote their research.
With his passion for teaching, research and community engagement, Sean is well-positioned to lead the Faculty of Environment and SFU in tackling the complex global challenges facing our world today.
The search for the Dean, Faculty of Environment was conducted in accordance with SFU Policy A 13.05 (Search Committees for Deans). We extend our sincere thanks to the search committee for their guidance and support throughout this process.
As many of you know, Naomi Krogman’s term as Dean concludes on June 30. To support continuity and effective operations during the transition, we are pleased to welcome Christina Giovas as Dean pro tem of the Faculty of Environment until Sean begins his term on August 1. Thank you to Christina for stepping into this important role.
Please join me in thanking Naomi for her contributions and congratulating and welcoming Sean to his new role.
