Alex Hinrichs wins second place at CPSA Three Minute Thesis
Congratulations to Political science MA student, Alex Hinrichs, for winning the first runner-up spot at the Canadian Political Science Association’s (CPSA) three-minute thesis competition (3MT). As per the format of the competition, she presented her graduate research topic, ‘Improving Gender Equity in the Canadian Energy Sector: Lessons from Abroad’, under the given time frame of three minutes, to a panel of non-specialist judges.
Hinrichs discovered her underlying interest in energy policy during her undergraduate degree, which prompted her to pursue her graduate studies in this area of research. Elaborating on her thesis topic, she says, “When I learned about the gender inequality within the energy sector, I became motivated to researching the topic further.â€
Before putting anything on paper, Hinrichs thought about all the critical aspects of her research topic that she wanted to summarize within three minutes. It took her several attempts to go over her speech. “I made numerous changes in the first few days to ensure that it was flowing well and conveyed the key messages. I practiced frequently to make sure that I was prepared for the day of the competition.â€

For political science students who intend to participate in the CPSA 3MT competition, Hinrichs has this piece of advice, “I think the most important thing to remember is to be confident in your research and your presentation.â€
The CPSA facilitates and promotes political and government studies in Canada. Through various activities and events, including the 3MT competition, it aims to connect students, researchers, journalists, practitioners, teachers and diverse individuals from across the country, who are interested in studies pertaining to politics and government.
