From fighters to first responders
Professor Megan MacKenzie and Kody Sider review the Canadian government's $73.9 billion plan to procure American F-35 fighter jets. This massive military expenditure, they argue, could be better spent preparing for real disasters looming on the horizon for Canadians--one caused by intensifying climate catastrophes.
MacKenzie is Simons Chair in International Law and Human Security in the School for International Studies, and the lead of SFU's DREAM Lab, or Defence Resources Exploring Alternatives to Militarism Lab. The DREAM Lab is an intensive week-long workshop that trains students to critically re-evaluate Canada's military and defense spending, exploring alternative approaches to bolster the everyday security of Canadians. MacKenzie is a leading expert on gender and war, military culture, gender, bias and discrimination in large institutions, and post-conflict reconstruction.
Kody Sider is a graduate student at 91ÅÝܽ’s School of Public Policy. He holds undergraduate degrees in international development and psychology.
