Biography
Helmut-Harry Loewen has been active in antifascist projects for over thirty-five years, initially with the Manitoba Coalition Against Racism and Apartheid, and subsequently with the Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research Society, Anti-Racist Action, and Fascist Free Treaty One. He has helped communities organize against fascist groups, including the KKK, Aryan Nations, and neo-Nazi ‘skinheads,’ and engaged in public education and media outreach. Prior to his retirement in 2015, Loewen taught at the University of Winnipeg, first as a lecturer in German and Philosophy, and then as a Sociology Department member. Loewen’s current research includes (i) analyses of counter-extremism frameworks, (ii) the history of far-right networks in state security agencies, and (iii) a study of ‘interventionist thinking” — “eingreifendes Denken” (Benjamin / Brecht) — at the core of an antifascism that is grounded in emancipatory Marxist perspectives.
