The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Taylor Jenkins Reid
Atira Books (2017)
We didn’t not like the book, it was a "digestible read" but we had a lot of issues with it - felt like a book for the masses, like a B list rom-com. We thought most of the characters were extremely one-dimensional and the main character of Monique being more or less unnecessary for the story. But the book made us want to keep reading, even though we thought the author failed to visualise the complexities of marginalised characters. We loved the way Evelyn weaponised marriage and sex to get what she wanted, because marriages were tools to her, as were men. A lot of the things we had issues with about the book could be explained with Evelyn being an unreliable narrator, but that didn’t necessarily excuse the flaws of the book. A quote from the club: “Did I hate it? Probably not”.
