Milka Njoroge
Biography
Milka Njoroge is the Ruth Wynn Woodward Junior Chair and Assistant Professor in the Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies Department. She joins SFU from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where she completed her PhD in the Department of Gender Studies. Her research focuses broadly on the visual economy of suffering in postcolonial contexts, through a consideration of how the global flow of images transforms habits of seeing and being seen, particularly as it pertains to migration, memory, and border regimes. She is currently working on two interrelated projects that examine the circulation of humanitarian images and the impact of AI on the circulation and consumption of these images. Her second project examines black diasporic art forms as constituting visual methodologies that subvert the totalizing efforts of digital economies of suffering.
