Shahbano Farooq
doctoral student in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field
I am motivated by true applicability, usability, and human-centered benefits of technology in our lives.
Why did you choose to come to SFU?
I chose SFU because Dr. Sheelagh Carpendale’s work has inspired me.
How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?
With the help of the general public, I imagine future possible applications of technology to support everyday life decision-making with superhuman abilities, such as Magneto's magnetic powers to attract objects.
What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?
Co-Design, Data Literacy, Human-Computer Interaction
How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?
My M.Sc. research on PairedVis—a tool designed to facilitate collaboration between domain experts and visualization designers—equipped me with critical skills that directly strengthen my PhD work. In this project, I gained experience in formalizing research questions by framing how co-design processes can best support shared understanding. I also developed expertise in designing technologies to support communication, as the tool integrated data views, mind mapping, and visualization templates to enable productive dialogue between participants. Finally, I conducted a user study that examined strategies for structuring collaborative sessions, which taught me how to design studies, recruit participants, and analyze qualitative and quantitative feedback. These skills provide me with a solid methodological foundation for investigating complex research questions in Human–Computer Interaction at the doctoral level.
