Job Title: Vacuum Systems Design Engineer/Technician (Part-time, Consultant, or Project-Based)
- Location: SFU Surrey Campus
- Application Period: October 1-16, 2025
- Appointment Period: 3 -12 months, depending on work progress
- Compensation: $24-$80/hour, depending on experience
Position Overview
The Laboratory for Alternative Energy Systems (LAEC) at 91ÅÝܽ developing a waste-heat driven sorption chiller/heat pump system. Our prototype is functional and entering a scale-up phase aimed at delivering commercial cooling solutions. We are now advancing the design of vacuum chambers and piping systems to ensure reliability, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
Role Summary
We are seeking a hands-on engineer or technician with proven experience in the design, fabrication, and assembly of vacuum systems. Working with our team, this individual will help optimize our chamber designs, select appropriate materials and sealing methods, and support the development of modular, transportable, and leak-resistant systems.
Minimum Qualifications
- Diploma, degree, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related fields
- 3+ years experience working with vacuum systems (low or high vacuum)
- Familiarity with stainless steel and carbon steel vacuum construction
- Experience with CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and basic vacuum simulation tools
- Hands-on experience with vacuum components (e.g., flanges, valves, gauges, pumps)
- Experience in thermal systems, clean tech, or HVAC is a plus
Responsibilities
- Review and improve current vacuum chamber and piping system designs
- Recommend and implement sealing and joint strategies (e.g., welded, CF, ISO)
- Assist in material and coating selection for corrosion resistance and vacuum compatibility
- Support prototyping efforts with CAD models and fabrication-ready documentation
- Provide guidance on tolerancing, expansion loops, and field assembly
- Advise on or lead vacuum testing and leak detection processes
- Contribute to scaling strategies and modular design for commercial deployment
