Community outreach advances sustainable agriculture and STEM engagement
Mechatronic Systems Engineering professor and director of SFU’s Global Institute for Agritech (GIA), Woo Soo Kim recently highlighted his leadership in advancing sustainable agricultural practices in collaboration with the Indigenous community.
Earlier this month, Kim and his team from the GIA attended the Stellat’en First Nation’s Salmon Festival where they shared their insights into advanced Agritech tools to help local farmers learn about data-driven insights to improve sustainable production practices. They also facilitated hands-on activities for youth, sparking their interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through the demonstration of innovative technologies. The team hopes that this collaboration will lay the groundwork for reciprocal learning, consistent with GIA’s mission to foster partnerships that empower youth and promote ecological sustainability practices for First Nations communities.
