How do you celebrate the 60th anniversary of 91ܽ’s Department of English? When this challenge presented itself, it seemed almost insurmountable. Yet, a couple of weeks ago, we pulled it off!

On October 16th, about 70 alumni, faculty members, students, and staff gathered to remember the highlights of the past six decades. Among those who joined us were two people who have been with the department since its earliest days: Rick McGrath and professor emeritus Malcolm Page. McGrath, a charter student, graduated with an Honours Bachelor of English, first class, in 1970, while Professor Page taught in the department from 1966 to 2000.

We also welcomed back former faculty members Paul Delany, Nicky Didicher, and Tom Grieve, who along with current faculty, provided valuable assistance to students and alumni during our lively trivia game. Questions focused on literature, SFU history, and the history of SFU English (You can check them out on the Celebrating 60 Years page of our website).

Our department has long been recognized for its strong creative writing program, and just last year we celebrated the 20thanniversary of the writer-in-residence program. To honour this tradition, professors Cornel Bogle and Joanne Leow, along with several students, read their poems to the delight of the audience.

Additional event highlights included:

  • A 60 years of memories slideshow
  • An archival images and materials display table
  • A curated “Literary Hits” playlist, available on Spotify
  • A door prize, won by current student Victoria San Martin

Enjoy more photos from the event. We thank SFU English alumnus, Ryan Cousineau, for taking all these great images!
