Areas of interest

The 3D influence of joint roughness on the shear strength of rock joints will be analyzed. Joint samples from drill cores will be scanned using a high-resolution, metrology-grade scanner. Several samples of each joint will be 3D printed and tested in shear under different shear orientations and normal stresses. Using statistical tools, the variability of shear strength in relation to orientation and roughness will be assessed. The project is carried out in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University in Germany.
