Preparing for midterms: key reminders for a smooth exam season
October 09, 2025
As midterm season approaches, these reminders can help ensure exams run smoothly and fairly for you and your students.
General exam reminders:
- Student IDs are required: For in-person exams, remind students to bring their SFU ID card. This helps confirm identity and prevent delays at the exam venue. This reminder has also been shared with students through student bulletin newsletters.
- Pull the class roster from goSFU: Download your class roster from goSFU before your exam date to ensure you have the most up-to-date enrolment information. Please note that although goSFU currently only contains legal names, the system will be updated by spring 2026 to display chosen names.
Quick tips for accommodation requests:
- How you’ll be notified: The Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) provides test/exam accommodations for students with disabilities. CAL will notify you by email anytime a student in your course is registered with CAL and entitled to accommodations.
- What you need to include: If one of your students is taking an exam through CAL, ensure you have provided complete exam information on the front page of the exam. This includes administrative information such as test duration, permitted aids and formula sheets.
- Student not registered? If a student requests accommodation but has not registered with CAL, please refer them as soon as possible. Information on how students can register with CAL is available on their Registering with CAL page.
Quick tip for concession requests:
- What if a student gets sick? Some students may miss assessments due to short-term illness or unexpected circumstances. In these cases, granting an academic concession is at your discretion as the instructor and guided by departmental or faculty policy. Learn more on Student Services' Academic Concessions page.
During midterms:
- Student IDs: Exam invigilators are reminded that some students’ names may not match their ID if their chosen and legal names differ. If there is a discrepancy, students should be allowed to write the exam and verification of identity should take place afterwards.
Thank you for supporting your students during midterms and helping to create equitable learning experiences across our campuses.
Reminder about Canvas Cloud:
Upgrading your courses while migrating to Canvas Cloud: If you are teaching next semester, you’ll need to set up or migrate your courses to Canvas Cloud before December 31, 2025. This is a great opportunity to update your courses with the most up-to-date accessibility standards.
- Learn more about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on the Centre for Educational Excellence's UDL page.
- If you have questions about moving your course to Canvas Cloud, .
