Irwin Cohen

PhD Criminology, 2001 

Irwin M. Cohen is an associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of the Fraser Valley. He is also the director of the Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research and serves as the president of Potus Consulting Inc. Cohen earned his PhD in Criminology from 91ÅÝܽ in 2001 and joined the University of the Fraser Valley's faculty team in 2003. He served as the director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at UFV from 2010 to 2013. From 2013 to 2017, he held the position of Senior University Research Chair in Crime Reduction for the RCMP.

Cohen has authored one book titled "Eliminating Crime: The Seven Essential Principles of Police-Based Crime Reduction". In addition, he has published numerous scholarly articles and book chapters, contributed to over 150 research reports, and delivered more than 100 conference papers and workshops. His research spans a wide range of topics, including policing, public safety, terrorism, state torture, serious and violent young offenders, addictions, mental health, gambling, and the role of technology in criminal justice. For his significant contributions to research, he received the University of the Fraser Valley’s Research Excellence Award in 2019.
