Darryl Plecas
BA Criminology, 1978│MA Criminology, 1981
Darryl Plecas was one of SFU’s first Criminology graduates, obtaining his BC (Criminology) in 1978 and his MA (Criminology) in 1981. He obtained his Doctorate in Higher Education from UBC in 1992.
Darryl spent his academic career at the University of Fraser Valley (UFV), where he taught in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice for 34 years. At various points during that career, he served as Chair of the School, a member of UFV’s Board of Governors, the Director of the School’s Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research, and as the RCMP University Research Chair. While he retired as Professor Emeritus in 2013, he has continued to teach, research, speak, and write on government and public safety issues. He is the author or co-author of more than 250 research reports, international journal articles, and other publications addressing a broad range of public safety issues.
Darryl is a recipient of many awards for his work, including UFV’s Teaching Excellence Award, the Teaching Excellence Award from the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning, CCSA’s Award of Excellence, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Public Safety, the Order of Abbotsford, and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal.
Outside of the academic world, and beginning in 2017, Darryl served two terms as a member of British Columbia’s Legislative Assembly – the second of which was as Speaker of the 41st Parliament. Darryl and his wife of 48 years, Joanne, live in Abbotsford.
