SFU researchers receive national recognition for clean energy innovation
Dr Steven Holdcroft, professor in SFU’s Department of Chemistry, together with SFU alumnus Ben Britton, Chief Strategy Officer of Ionomr Innovations, received the 2024 Kalev Pugi Award from the Society of Chemical Industry.
Established in 2002, the award is presented to an individual or team for exceptional achievements in research and development, which is of benefit to Canada. The highly coveted award sees applications from researchers from universities, industrial facilities and research institutions across Canada.
Holding the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Electrochemical Materials, Dr Holdcroft is recognized internationally for his pioneering work in polymer chemistry, particularly in the field of electrochemical energy conversion. His research has led to the development of advanced ion-exchange membranes and polymers that are critical for clean energy technologies. These innovations have not only allowed the research community to advance their scientific understanding in the field but also led to the commercialization of sustainable energy solutions.
Dr Britton, joint winner of the award, is the Chief Strategy Officer of Ionomr Innovations and an SFU alumnus. He has successfully transformed scientific breakthroughs into usable solutions and his leadership has significantly contributed to developing new sustainable materials.
The pair have also been honoured with a prestigious Governor General’s Innovation Award for their ground-breaking research into materials with the potential to revolutionize the clean energy sector.
