CCMS Statement against Israeli and U.S. Attacks on Iran
The Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies (CCMS) stands in solidarity with the people of Iran and members of the Iranian diaspora who are enduring the consequences of Israel’s intensifying military assault. On Thursday, June 12, Israel launched a wide-scale attack on Iran that rapidly escalated, leaving hundreds of people dead, many thousands injured, and critical infrastructure bombed and destroyed. The counterattacks led to dozens of civilians dead and hundreds injured in Israel, further escalating the cycle of violence that threatens to engulf the whole region.
Initially framed as an effort to deter Iran from developing nuclear weapons—despite repeated IAEA assessments finding no evidence of such a program—the assault has since widened, with some officials now invoking “regime change” as a strategic goal. Exacerbated by the illegal U.S. attack against Iran on June 21, this campaign constitutes a grave violation of international law. Coupled with the rapid escalation of the war, we are witnessing alarming levels of Islamophobic discourse targeting Muslim communities worldwide.
Such violence will not bring peace or security—only destruction and loss. The future of Iran must be determined by its own people, not imposed by foreign powers. We join those around the world calling for an immediate end to this assault and for the pursuit of peace over the politics of war.
