GOAL:

The overall goal of the aging in the right place (AIRP) project is to improve the shelter and housing options to meet the unique and complex health and social needs of older persons experiencing homelessness across Canada.

ABOUT ROULEAU MANOR:

Rouleau Manor (Carewest) provides long-term residential care to adults of any gender who require additional supports to meet their complex health needs. In addition to multidisciplinary care services, this residential facility provides amenities such as, private rooms, communal eating spaces, entertainment areas, and a designated smoking area. Rouleau Manor also supports their residents to adapt to communal living by encouraging social interaction to create a welcoming and safe environment.

PROVIDER INTERVIEWS:

Staff spoke to the client-centred approaches and policies utilized at Rouleau Manor that foster opportunities for residents to AIRP. Staff emphasized the importance of goal setting alongside residents to ensure that all individual’s unique needs are met while residing in the facility. Staff also highlighted that a crucial element of Rouleau Manor was fostering resident’s connection with other residents as well as the community.

ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT:

The built environment of Rouleau Manor facilitates AIRP by including indoor spaces devised to encourage social interaction among residents. This includes a smoking room, and multiple communal eating and entertainment spaces. However, challenges in accessibility were documented.

CLIENT INTERVIEWS:

Clients discussed the importance of having access to healthcare supports onsite. This included having good relationships with staff, which facilitated connections these resources. Clients often mentioned social connection with residents and natural supports as a key factor to AIRP.
