Building our knowledge
Without understanding the full history of the country we currently call Canada, we cannot and will not make any progress towards Upholding Truth and Reconciliation.
This page highlights both SFU-led and externally-created training and resources to help the SFU community build a better understanding of Indigenous peoples and apply this understanding in their work and studies.

sitting quietly on the rocks, the sun shining upon her face,
listening to the trickling sound of water in the creek,
reflecting, she hears her sister say,
Our parents and grandparents continually pass on their words of
wisdom every day, so that we may pass it on to future generations

Training and Resources
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. program
The R.E.S.P.E.C.T. program has been designed to create an understanding of how to build respectful and sustainable relationships with Host Nations. It will ensure that SFU employees honour the Nations’ knowledges, languages, cultures and protocols. The program enhances ongoing professional development for SFU employees in the areas of cultural safety, decolonization and Indigenization at all three campuses.
R.E.S.P.E.C.T. cohorts open each semester. The course takes place over 11 weeks in a hybrid learning model combining self-study and personal reflection online, with online discussion and periodic in-person meetings.
San’yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training
San’yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training is a facilitated online training program designed to increase knowledge, enhance self-awareness and strengthen the skills of those who work both directly and indirectly with Indigenous people. The goal of the training is to further develop individual competencies and promote positive partnerships.
SFU Library: Learning towards Reconciliation
SFU Library hosts a large, curated collection of resources to help the SFU community begin to engage in decolonial and Indigenizing work.
Office for Aboriginal Peoples (OAP)
Established in 2009, the OAP’s mandate is to lead the implementation of the Aboriginal Strategic Plan at SFU, including the calls to action in the Walk this Path with Us report. As part of this work, the OAP supports Indigenous initiatives, services and programs across the university, and breaks ground on new ones. Discover an array of resources for staff and faculty and the broader SFU community.
Office for Aboriginal Peoples: Learning and Research Resources
Indigenous Curriculum Resource Centre (ICRC)
The ICRC is a physical and online space that collects books, articles, websites and audio-visual materials on Indigenizing curriculum and Indigenous pedagogy. These materials centre Indigenous approaches to teaching and learning, and help university educators decolonize and Indigenize their classrooms.
Courses and Programs
As an educational institution, SFU has a responsibility to Uphold Truth and Reconiliation through courses and programs for students, as well as resources for staff and faculty and the broader SFU community.
