91ÅÝܽ respectfully acknowledges the Coast Salish Peoples, including the xÊ·məθkÊ·É™y̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), sÉ™lilwÉ™taɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), qÌ“Ãc̓əyÌ“ (Katzie), kÊ·ikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Qayqayt, Kwantlen, Semiahmoo and Tsawwassen Peoples, on whose unceded traditional territories our three campuses reside.
First, we listen, learn and understand the truth. Only then can we act.
Upholding Truth and Reconciliation at SFU means collectively facing up to the harms of residential schools and other colonial practices enacted over more than a century.
It means working hard to understand the truth and stories of these lands and our relationships and responsibilities to them.
Most of all, it means "nothing about us without us" and taking meaningful action in partnership with Indigenous peoples. Only then can we create safe, welcoming places for Indigenous students, staff and faculty to learn, teach and work.
We are on this journey for generations to come. Track SFU's ongoing commitments and progress, as well as other major reports that inform, frame and guide our journey.
SFU recognizes and honours the title and rights of Indigenous people as stated in UNDRIP and we respect and partner with the host Indigenous Nations on which our campuses are located. We have the responsibility to illuminate the truth of Indigenous people in Canada and around the world and to begin to chart a path of Reconciliation.
"We will embrace this critical and complex call, striving to create a strong and safe sense of belonging for all Indigenous people to strengthen and harness their inherent gifts."
