Academic Plan
The SFU Academic Plan (2025-2030) serves as a framework to align Faculty and Unit activities with What’s Next: The SFU Strategy, advancing our academic mission as a leading research university that provides an exceptional learning environment for our students.
Focus Areas
The following focus areas will guide institutional and Faculty/Unit multi-year planning over the coming years.
Program Development and Curriculum Renewal
Design and deliver coherent, innovative curriculum that provides an exceptional student experience, and features opportunities for community-engaged and experiential learning.
Research Excellence
Continue to expand SFU’s research activities, deepen our engagement with communities, businesses and governments, and increase the impact of our scholars on the world.
Decolonization and Indigenization
Create welcoming campus spaces for Indigenous peoples, including academic pathways and supports for academic success and decolonized teaching and research.
Inclusive Excellence and Access
Advance inclusive systems, policies and procedures that remove barriers and improve access for all to learn, teach, work, and flourish.
Internationalization and Global Engagement
Engage faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners in addressing complex local and global challenges.
Institutional Effectiveness
Ensure the university’s resource allocations and support activities directly and effectively promote the academic mission.
Together, the goals identified across these focus areas are designed to:
- Translate the vision and values outlined in What’s Next: The SFU Strategy into academic priorities.
- Provide context to guide institutional planning, as well as Faculty and Unit planning.
- Align the university’s learning, teaching, research, engagement and support activities.
- Inform multi-year student enrolment, faculty renewal and budget planning.
In recognition of the important link between teaching and scholarly activities, the plan also embeds SFU Strategic Research Plan (2023-2028) priorities and implementation plans alongside other research-related goals associated with teaching and learning.
Faculty and Unit Academic Plans
As a vital part of the academic planning process, Faculties and Units within the Provost’s portfolio prepared individual multi-year plans that align with the focus areas of the SFU Academic Plan and convey what each Faculty, Department/School or Unit wants to achieve over the duration of these plans.
